How to prepare your data for IMu Tours

There are a number of things you will need to do to prepare your data for use with IMu Tours:

  • It is necessary to prepare content (video and / or audio) of the narratives of collection objects.

    Note: Only objects with the necessary multimedia attachments will be included in a tour. If an object does not have the required multimedia attachments, it will be dropped from the tour.

    If your organisation already uses the EMu Narratives module, you will probably discover that existing Narratives content can be used with little, if any, adaptation for this purpose. iPod content can be either or both:

    • Video - M4V.
    • Audio - MP3 or M4A with embedded still images (default).

    These files are stored in the Multimedia module and attached to the relevant Narratives record.

  • You will need to prepare content for navigation around the collection:
    • From each room to every adjacent room (and back again).
    • To each display location in a room.

    This requires writing an audio script that explains:

    • how to get from one room to another;
    • orients the visitor within a room; and
    • guides them to a particular display location.

    A sample script has been provided as an indication of what is involved.

Much of this preparatory work is a once-off task. Navigation instructions explain how to get to (and from) display locations, not objects, which means that changing the object in a location has no effect on the navigation instructions: they are reusable. Although there is some overhead in preparing your data for IMu Tours the good news is that:

  • If you already use the Locations module for recording display locations of your objects, much of the Locations work is already done.
  • If you already use the Narratives module, much of the Narratives work is probably already done: existing narrative text can usually be repurposed with little adaptation for IMu Tours podcasts.
  • Almost all of the preparatory work is a one-time only task and can be reused time and again. You should only need to add new locations and directions if new display spaces are added or existing display spaces change significantly.
